Curtains

We Motorized Our Living Room Curtains for Under $200 (No Electrician!)

Three months into homeownership, I (Mark) decided our living room curtains needed an upgrade. Not because they looked bad—they were perfectly fine beige panels from Target—but because opening them every morning while holding a cup of coffee and dodging our golden retriever Copper had become an Olympic sport.

Diane was skeptical. "How much is this going to cost?" she asked, eyebrow raised. Fair question. We'd just dropped a small fortune on new flooring, and our budget was tighter than Emma's grip on her favorite stuffed animal.

After two weeks of research (and maybe three dad jokes about "curtain calls"), I found a solution: RYSE SmartShades. Total cost? $189. No electrician required. No complicated installation. Just a smart motor that attaches to your existing curtain rod.

💡 Dad Joke Break

Why did the curtain get promoted? It was always pulling its weight! (Diane rolled her eyes at this one.)

What You'll Need

Here's the complete shopping list. I ordered everything from Amazon and had it delivered in two days:

  • RYSE SmartShade motor ($189) - This is the star of the show
  • Your existing curtain rod - Must be a traditional rod (not I-Rail!)
  • Smartphone - For the RYSE app setup
  • 15 minutes of patience - Seriously, that's all it takes

Step 1: Check Your Curtain Rod Type

This is CRITICAL. RYSE works with traditional curtain rods and U-Rail systems. It does NOT work with I-Rail. Here's how to tell:

✅ Traditional Rod (Motorization Ready)

Round rod with rings or grommets. This is what most people have.

✅ U-Rail (Motorization Ready)

C-shaped track system. More modern look, RYSE compatible.

❌ I-Rail (NOT Motorization Ready)

Enclosed track system. You'll need to swap this out first.

Step 2: Install the RYSE Motor (It's Stupidly Easy)

I'm not exaggerating when I say this took 10 minutes. Diane timed me. Here's what you do:

  1. Remove your curtain rod from the brackets - Just lift it out. Ours came out with zero effort.
  2. Slide the RYSE motor onto the rod - It clips on near one end. Make sure the wheel touches the rod.
  3. Put the rod back in the brackets - Seriously, that's it for the hardware part.
  4. Plug it in - RYSE comes with a power adapter. We tucked the cable behind our couch so it's invisible.

Emma (our 3-year-old) walked in halfway through and asked if I was "fixing the curtains." When I told her I was making them magic, she sat cross-legged on the floor to watch. Best audience ever.

Step 3: Set Up the App & Connect to WiFi

Download the RYSE app (iOS or Android). The setup wizard is genuinely foolproof:

  • Open the app and create an account
  • Press the button on the RYSE motor to put it in pairing mode
  • Connect it to your WiFi (2.4GHz only - this tripped me up at first!)
  • Calibrate the motor by running it open and closed once

The calibration is where the magic happens. The motor learns the exact length of your curtain rod and stores it. From that point on, you can set it to open 25%, 50%, 75%, or any custom percentage.

⚠️ Pro Tip from Diane

Make sure your WiFi is 2.4GHz, not 5GHz! Our router had both, and Mark spent 20 minutes troubleshooting before I reminded him to check the frequency. (I'll never let him forget it.)

Step 4: Connect to Alexa, Google, or HomeKit

This is optional but HIGHLY recommended. We use Alexa, and setup took 2 minutes:

  1. Open the Alexa app → Skills & Games
  2. Search for "RYSE" and enable the skill
  3. Link your RYSE account
  4. Discover devices

Now we can say "Alexa, open the living room curtains" while still half-asleep. Game changer.

The First Test: Emma's Reaction

Once everything was set up, I called Emma over. "Watch this," I said, pulling out my phone. I tapped "Close" in the app.

The curtains glided shut. Smoothly. Silently. Magically.

Emma's eyes went HUGE. "Again! Again!" She made me open and close them four times. Copper (our golden retriever) just looked confused.

Diane admitted—reluctantly—that it was "pretty cool." High praise in our house.

Smart home control

What We Love After 3 Weeks

  • Sunrise automation - We set the curtains to open at 7 AM. Natural light wakes us up gently (well, gentler than Emma jumping on our bed).
  • Sunset automation - At 6 PM, they close automatically. Privacy without thinking about it.
  • Movie mode - "Alexa, close the living room curtains" = instant home theater vibes.
  • No more dog hair on curtains - Copper used to get tangled in them when we manually opened/closed. Not anymore!

What Could Be Better

Honesty time. Nothing is perfect:

  • Speed - It's not slow, but it's not instant either. Takes about 20 seconds to fully open 8-foot curtains.
  • Noise level - Quiet but not silent. About as loud as an electric toothbrush.
  • Power cord - It's long enough but you'll need an outlet nearby. No battery option.

These are minor nitpicks. We'd still recommend RYSE to anyone.

The Budget Breakdown

RYSE SmartShade motor$189
Existing curtain rod$0 (already had it)
Electrician$0 (DIY!)
Total$189

Our Honest Verdict

If you have traditional curtain rods or U-Rail and want an easy, affordable smart home upgrade, RYSE is a no-brainer. The installation is genuinely simple (if I can do it, anyone can), the app is intuitive, and the daily convenience is way better than we expected.

Would we do it again? Absolutely. In fact, we're already planning to motorize Emma's blackout curtains next. Stay tuned for that guide!
